Donations to Muir

Donations to Muir are fully tax-deductible, provided they are to the school "in general" and not for the exclusive benefit of a specific individual or group of individuals. In particular, the IRS does not allow teachers to take a deduction for goods or money they "donate" to their classrooms. (Teachers may consider such donations to be a "necessary job-expense" provided they have first checked that the school will not pay for the expense—the IRS does not allow deductions for expenses that an employer might have paid for.) See you tax advisor for more details. (For additional information, talk to Mr. Friedman. He got burned at a tax audit on this issue.)
